A few years ago, Mike was taking multiple prescription medications daily.  He was not living the healthiest life.  He weighed 424 pounds and had high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Mike’s desire to be a healthy fit parent inspired him to lose weight. To help track his health progress, he decided to get a wellness scan (screening) offered at his job by Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He was stunned by the results.

“The numbers aren’t good, I’ll tell you. To see them on paper was a big shock to me. I didn’t realize how big I had gotten,” Mike said.

With the encouragement of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield wellness staff, Mike felt supported and was able to make progress in his goals to get healthy and lose weight.

MIKE: Four years ago, I weighed 424 pounds. I had high blood pressure, I had diabetes, and I had bad cholesterol. I took five medications a day, and I just was not taking care of myself at all. It wasn't a good time in my life. I wasn't in the position or the shape to be an active father, but I want to be there for her. I want to watch her graduate high school, I want to watch her get married, and I want to watch her have kids. My name is Mike Warner, I'm 38 years old, and I've been a Blue Cross Blue Shield member for eight years. My wife and I were talking and then I just said, hey, I'm going to go up and check out this gym.I started going half hour every other day, just to start. The results started to go. I upped it to two days on and one day off, then three days on and one day off, then four, then five. In November of 2010, Blue Cross Blue Shield came to my employer and they were offering free wellness scans. I had just started my lifestyle change a couple months prior to it, so I said hey, what the heck. I'll go there, I'll get these numbers, and then I can progressively track them throughout the years. So I went in and I got my original work up, which-- the numbers aren't good, I'll tell you. To see them on paper was a big shock for me. I didn't realize how big I had gotten, and I was already kind of on the way down from there, so it was eye opening, that very first one. Then November 2011 they did the same thing, and low and behold, my numbers were remarkably better. So that was fantastic, I'm thinking this is great. 2013, my numbers were off the charts great. Four years later, after deciding that I needed to change my lifestyle, as of this morning I weigh 212 pounds. I no longer take any prescription medication. I couldn't be happier, I feel amazing. I can move, I can play, I can ride bicycles, I can jog. It's a night and day transformation. It feels great. Throughout the years, the Blue Cross Blue Shield wellness staff was extremely supportive because I would bring my previous year's numbers with me and they would see the progress that I was making and give me an attaboy, nicely done type stuff. Blue Cross Blue Shield helped me more than they'll ever know.
