BARBARA: I had tried lots of different weight loss programs where you go to meetings and you pay money or you count points or you-- I've tried the low-carb thing. I've tried all of that, and it was to no avail because it was a diet. And being a part of the wellness program is not a diet. It is a lifestyle change. My name is Barbara Stevens. I'm 60 years old, and I've been a BlueCross BlueShield member for 22 years. Prior to becoming involved with BlueCross BlueShield's wellness program, I had just let myself go. My weight got up to 192. About two years ago, I received a letter from BlueCross and BlueShield offering this lifestyle program or wellness program. We could sign up for the program and have our own wellness coach. It was a very positive experience. I was put in touch with Steffanie,
and she has stayed with me these several years.

STEFFANIE: My name is Steffanie James. I'm a lifestyle management coach at BlueCross BlueShield. My role as a lifestyle management coach is to provide additional support to the members in reaching their goals of having a healthy lifestyle. Whenever somebody calls in I'm going to help them set goals, and then we're going to work towards reaching those goals.

BARBARA: She knows a lot about nutrition. She knows a lot about technology and apps that are available. When I have struggles, she is able to coach me through that. She's not judgmental, but she also holds my feet to the fire about changes that I need to make and things that I could have done differently.

STEFFANIE: My goal is not to tell somebody what they have to do, but rather to help them figure out what they want to do on their own. During my conversations with Barbara, I encouraged her to find a tracking program to use to help pay attention to what she was eating, and we also talked about finding a pedometer and a tracking system to help motivate her to move more.

BARABARA: What I really love about having Steffanie as a lifestyle coach is that her focus has been on helping me become a healthier person. Since working with Steffanie, I've lost about 37 pounds on my way to hopefully losing 50 total. I have more energy now, and since that time, my son has gotten married, I have three wonderful grandsons. Things have changed, and there is a lot more that I want to live for. I'm not finished with the weight loss, but I'm very confident that I can get down exactly where I need to be. I know a lot of people are not blessed with health care these days, and it's wonderful to have someone that you can lean on and talk to that will help you take care of yourself and your family.
