The Eyes Have It: Protect Them with Routine Eye Exams

The Eyes Have It: Protect Them with Routine Eye Exams

Eye exams are a great way to keep an eye on your health. Eye exams can help you get the right prescription for glasses or contact lenses.  They can also be a real ‘eye opener’ when it comes to your health.

Your eyes aren’t just windows into your soul, they are windows into what’s going on with your body. During an eye exam, your eye doctor or specialist will check for eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. They may also look for early signs of other health conditions, such as:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Stroke
How often should I get an eye exam?

If you DON’T have eye trouble, wear glasses or contact lenses, or have risk factors for eye diseases, the American Optometric Association leaving site icon recommends the following schedule for eye exams:

Age       Eye Exam Frequency
0-2 years    6 months of age
2-5 years   3 years of age
6-18 years   Before first grade, then every 2 years
18-60 years   Every 2 years
61+   Each year

If you have a family history of eye diseases or trouble seeing things clearly, you may need to get an eye exam more often.
